Scholarship Eligibility & Essay Competition
In order to participate in the competition, an applicant must either be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university or be planning to enroll for the fall 2016 semester. In order to apply, applicants must write a 500-word essay on the following topic:
The CDC indicates that approximately 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs in the United States every year. Michigan Law holds dog bite owners strictly liable for injuries that result after a dog bite, meaning that victims do not have to show that the owner of the dog was negligent in any way or was aware that dog was the type that may bite. This is unlike the law in many other United States jurisdictions, which follow a “one bite rule;” under this rule, dog owners are not liable for injuries that occur the first time a dog bites a person. Which rule to do you think makes more sense, and why?
Essays will be judged on the quality of the writing and the potential the applicant demonstrates for success in a field of study related to law.
Deadline: April 15, 2016
