2014 17th Annual Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition

Grammy Foundation promotes discussion and debate on the most compelling legal issues facing the music industry today. The writing contest challenges students to identify, research and write an essay with a proposed solution on a compelling legal issue confronting the music industry. A national panel of the music law experts will judge the paper in a blind process and select 5 finalists.

2014 The Honorable Joel K. Asarch Elder Law and Special Needs Section Scholarship

The New York Bar Foundation is accepting applications for The Honorable Joel K. Asarch Elder Law and Special Needs Section Scholarship.

 A completed application and supporting documentation as detailed in the guidelines must be submitted to The New York Bar Foundation on or before Sunday, November 30, 2014

The $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a second year (2L) or third year (3L) law student who is enrolled in a law school in the State of New York during the 2014-2015 academic year and is actively participating in an Elder Law Clinic at the school during the 2014-2015 academic year or performs other substantial efforts which demonstrate interest in the legal rights of the elderly or the practice of elder law.

2014 MARIO G. OBLEDO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

HNBA LEGAL EDUCATION FUND ANNOUNCES THE MARIO G. OBLEDO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Fund's Board of Directors established the Mario G. Obledo Memorial Scholarship in 2010, shortly after Dr. Obledo's passing earlier that same year. Obledo was a remarkable champion for Latino civil rights and the development of Latino attorneys. He co-founded the HNBA and MALDEF and led several civil rights organizations, both Hispanic and mainstream. The Fund's scholarship program is a fitting tribute to Obledo and will be awarded to a Hispanic law student that best exemplifies the life, aspirations and commitments of Mario Obledo. The Obledo Memorial Scholarship will be funded at $10,000 as a single award to a deserving law student enrolled at the time of application at an American Bar Association accredited school of law.

How to Apply
Applications and their attachments will ONLY be accepted online. Hard copies submitted by mail or fax will NOT be accepted or reviewed by The HNBA Fund. The Fund will not grant exceptions or deadline extensions. You are strongly encouraged to prepare and submit your application ahead of the deadline. Please also know that the online application function will time out after 30 minutes and so you are further encouraged to prepare your application materials in advance of completing the online application. The HNBA Fund will award one Mario G. Obledo Memorial Scholarship annually to a deserving student enrolled at the time of application at an American Bar Association accredited school of law. Eligibility: Students enrolled in any accredited law school in the United States for the fall semester of 2014. Unpublished papers, papers published in any law journal or other publication during calendar year 2014, and papers scheduled for publication in 2014 or 2015 are eligible for submission. Co-authored papers are not eligible.

Award winners will be invited to attend ASECA’s annual dinner in Washington, DC on February 20, 2015. Travel and lodging expenses for the first place award winner will be reimbursed by ASECA up to $1,000.00 in actual expenses.

2014 Antitrust Section Law Student Fellowship

The New York Bar Foundation is accepting applications for the 2015 Antitrust Section Law Student Fellowship.   

 
A completed application and supporting documentation as detailed in the guidelines must be submitted to The New York Bar Foundation on or before Monday, December 15, 2014.

 
The Fellowship, valued at $6,000, will be awarded to one (1) or two (2) students to spend the summer of 2015 (10 weeks) working on antitrust matters in the New York Office of New York Attorney General, Antitrust Bureau; Federal Trade Commission, Northeast Region; or Department of Justice Antitrust Division, New York Field Office.  The Fellowship is open to all first-year (1L) and second-year (2L) students (as of the Fall 2014 semester) who are capable of fulfilling the requested work hours and responsibilities and meet the criteria.

2014 Ladah Law Firm Injury Scholarship

The "Ladah Law Firm Injury Scholarship" is a $2,000 scholarship open to applicants nationwide who are currently attending law school. The deadline is May 31, 2015.

This Scholarship will be judged & awarded on merit and need. Applicants will be required to demonstrate:
1. How an injury you or someone close to you experienced has impacted your life.
2. How your experience with an injury or an accident has contributed to your desire & motivation to become an attorney.
3. Personal commitment to working with, helping or caring for those affected by injuries and accidents?

These personal injuries or accidents can be from (but not limited to) car accidents, motorcycle accidents, slip & falls, dangerous property or work conditions, etc. To be considered, the injuries sustained should not be self inflicted or by injured person’s own fault.

2014 Avvo Scholarship Program


Avvo has created this program to help inspire future generations of lawyers to innovate and impact change in the industry and our local communities. The program consists of two annual scholarships; one for JD Law Students and one for Undergraduate & Pre-Law Students, each with their own awards. JD Law Students will have the opportunity to win a $10,000 scholarship and be admitted to the newly-created Avvo Scholars Circle, Class of 2015, while Undergraduate Students have the chance to win a $5,000 scholarship award.

2014 Albert S. Pergam International Law Writing Competition

The International Section of New York State Bar Association, with support of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP, is pleased to announce the annual Albert S. Pergam International Law Writing Competition. The competition is intended to encourage students of law to write on areas of public or private international law. Competition is open to all law student. The winner will receive $2,000 and publication of the article in the New York International Law Review.

2014 Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies

The "Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies," seeks to recognize and support the efforts of graduate and/or law students dedicated to improving  the lives of workers, by awarding up to five $10,000 scholarships annually.

To be eligible for an award, individuals must be Graduate or Law Students enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the United States or Canada and must have a demonstrated interest in, and wish to make a career out of, working in the labor movement and on behalf of workers’ rights.
To receive an award, eligible candidates must meet a combination of criteria identified below
  • A strong academic record
  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement
  • A strong recommendation from an academic or a labor/workers’ rights practitioner
  • Good written and oral communication skills
Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate financial need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) scores or otherwise.

Deadline is Monday, November 10, 2014.

2014 American College of Consumer Financial Services Laywers Writing Competition

Each year The American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers seeks to recognize written contributions to the field of consumer financial services law. Eligible papers include publishable articles, substantial book reviews, or book chapters; books; and student case note or comment. In any year, depending on the quality of the submissions, awards may be made in all or some of these three categories.

The awards include a cash payment ($2,500 for books, $2,000 for articles, reviews, or book chapters; and $1,000 for student work), a certificate or other token of recognition, and travel expenses to attend the College's annual dinner held in conjunction with the Spring Meeting of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association.

Entries must have been written or published between November 15, 2013 and December 1, 2014.

Thomas Jefferson School of law is pleased to announce the inaugural Jameson Crane III Disability and the Law Writing Competition. Made possible by the generous gift of Thomas Jefferson School of Law alumnus Jameson Crane III, the Crane Writing Competition seeks to encourage outstanding student scholarship at the intersection of law and medicine, or law and the social sciences. The competition promotes an understanding of these topics, furthers the development of legal rights and protections, and improves the lives of those with disabilities.
 
The competition is open to currently enrolled law students, medical students, and doctoral candidates in related fields who attend an accredited graduate program of study in the United States. Submitted papers may be on any topic relating to disability law, including legal issues arising with respect to employment, government services and programs, public accommodations, education, higher education, housing, and health care.
 
Submissions will be judged anonymously by an independent panel of experts. The winner of the competition will receive a $1,500 cash prize and the Thomas Jefferson Law Review (TJLR) will consider the paper for publication under the TJLR’s editorial standards. Two second place winners will each receive a $1,000 cash prize.  Preference for these additional winners will be given to submissions from disciplines not represented by the grand prize winner.
 
All submissions must be submitted electronically to: cranewritingcompetition@tjsl.edu. All entries must be received by midnight, Pacific Standard Time, January 15, 2015. Winning submissions will be announced by April 15, 2015.

2015 Trusts and Estates Law Section Fellowship



The New York Bar Foundation is pleased to announce the 2015 Trusts and Estates Law Section Fellowship which has been established by the Foundation through a gift from the Trusts and Estates Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. The Fellowship will be awarded to four second-year (2L) law students who are currently enrolled in law schools in the State of New York to work in trusts and estates law positions in the public sector in the State of New York during the summer of 2015.

The American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers Annual Writing Competition

The American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers (ACCFSL) is pleased to announce awards to be presented for

Center for Alcohol Policy (CAP) Essay Contest

The Center for Alcohol Policy (CAP) is now accepting entries for its Seventh Annual Essay Contest.  The CAP Essay Contest is intended to foster debate, analysis and examination of state alcohol regulation and its implications for citizens across the United States.

The topic for this year’s contest is: “As states contemplate the legalization of prohibited products, like marijuana, what are some lessons policymakers and regulators can learn from the movement to end alcohol Prohibition in the 1930s?”

The deadline for entries is November 17, 2014.  Winners will be announced in early 2015.
