2016 Howard C. Schwab Memorial Essay Contest Section of Family Law

Each year, the American Bar Association Section of Family Law conducts an essay contest to encourage law students to think about current issues in family law, and to encourage participation in the Section of Family Law.

Subject Matter of Essay
The primary focus of each essay should be an issue of law, although some interdisciplinary material may be useful in addressing a legal issue. Since winning entries may be published in Family Law Quarterly, entrants are encouraged to write on subjects of national interest. Essays on such subjects usually include citations to the law of several jurisdictions. However, if the law in one state reflects a significant development or trend, that too could be an appropriate subject for an entry. Essays should be limited to approximately 5,000 words (25 double-spaced, typewritten pages including footnotes). Longer essays will be judged unfavorably, and those longer than 28 pages will be disqualified. Essays scheduled to be published, and essays that have previously been published, are ineligible for consideration.
  •  The essay format was selected to stimulate creativity of thought. Entries will be judged on the basis of originality, quality of analysis, quality of research, style and organization, and practicality and timeliness of subject.

Eligibility of Contestants
Contestants must be J.D. students at ABA-approved law schools who are:
  •  second or third-year full-time students;
  • second through fourth-year part-time students; or
  • first-year students enrolled in schools where the subject of family law is part of the first-year curriculum;
  • Citizens or legal permanent residents of the U.S.
Prize
First Place: $1,500
Second Place: $750.00
Third Place: $350.00

DEADLINE: All entries must be e-mailed and postmarked on or before April 29, 2016.  In order to be assigned a number, you must send your entry form by April 15, 2016. These dates must be strictly adhered to.
The ABA will confirm receipt of entries via e-mail.

Questions regarding the contest should be directed to the ABA Section of Family Law at 312-988-5145.

Michigan Injury Lawyer Scholarship

The Michigan personal injury law firm Michigan Injury Lawyers is happy to announce that it will be awarding a $500 bi-yearly scholarship to a student who is planning to attend a college or university during the 2016-2017 academic year.

Scholarship Eligibility & Essay Competition

In order to participate in the competition, an applicant must either be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university or be planning to enroll for the fall 2016 semester. In order to apply, applicants must write a 500-word essay on the following topic:
The CDC indicates that approximately 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs in the United States every year. Michigan Law holds dog bite owners strictly liable for injuries that result after a dog bite, meaning that victims do not have to show that the owner of the dog was negligent in any way or was aware that dog was the type that may bite.  This is unlike the law in many other United States jurisdictions, which follow a “one bite rule;” under this rule, dog owners are not liable for injuries that occur the first time a dog bites a person. Which rule to do you think makes more sense, and why?
Essays will be judged on the quality of the writing and the potential the applicant demonstrates for success in a field of study related to law.
Deadline: April 15, 2016

Common Cause 2016 "Gerrymander Standard" Writing Competition

The Supreme Court has long suggested there is a limit for what is acceptable partisan gerrymandering, but like obscenity, so far the line is undefined and left to courts to know it when they see it. The Court has said that it is willing to hear constitutional challenges to partisan gerrymandering, but existing legal theories have been insufficient to empower citizens and advocates with the tools they need to overturn partisan gerrymanders in court.

Common Cause’s 2016 “Gerrymander Standard” Writing Competition is your chance to change that.

For the second year, we invite legal and social science practitioners, scholars, and students to submit papers proposing a new definition of partisan gerrymandering or further developing an existing standard and pairing that definition with an effective legal theory to challenge unfair redistricting plans in court.

Winning authors receive:
1st Place: $5,000, 2nd place: $3,000, 3rd place: $2,000. Along with a publication in a leading academic journal. Payment of travel expenses to present papers at a national redistricting reform symposium.

Deadline: March 27, 2016.
