HCBF Scholarship Application Criteria, Guidelines & Requirements 

All scholarship candidates MUST submit a COMPLETE and ACCURATE application and must include ALL required supplemental materials in a submission that must be postmarked no later than the extended date May 9, 2019, to be considered.

All applications that are untimely or that are not in conformance with the criteria listed below will not be considered. All awards are distributed at the discretion of the Hudson County Bar Foundation Scholarship Committee. All Applicants must be enrolled in or admitted to an accredited ABA-approved law school at the time of the interview in order to be eligible for a scholarship award. The Hudson County Bar Foundation reserves the right to request additional information from each scholarship Applicant.

All of the following documentation must be submitted in person or in a mailed submission postmarked by the extended date May 9, 2019. If you have any questions about this application or this process, please contact the Hudson County Bar Foundation at 201-798-4708.

Scholarship Application: All relevant sections of the application must be completed by the Applicant. The responses to each portion of the application MUST be printed or typed. The application must be signed by the Applicant.

Proof of Hudson County Residency: The Applicant MUST provide proof of Hudson County residency (i.e. driver’s license, tax bill, utility bill, etc.)

Official Transcript(s): The Applicant MUST submit his or her latest law school or college official transcript with his or her scholarship application. If you are a first-year law student, please send your undergraduate official transcript. You must also submit a transcript of your grades from your first semester in law school if these grades were released before the application deadline.

Personal Statement: The Applicant MUST submit a typed, double spaced Personal Statement with his or her scholarship application. The personal statement shall not exceed two pages in length. Scholarship applications accompanied by a personal statement not in conformance with these guidelines will not be considered. The personal statement shall discuss the following:

  • Why did you decide to attend Law School? 
  • Why did you choose the Law School that you are/will be attending? 
  • What do you see as the role of the lawyer in society? 
  • What effect will the granting of this Scholarship have on your Law School career? 
  • School & Community Activities 
  • Career Goals 
  • Do you intend to practice in Hudson County? 
Financial Aid Confirmation Letter: The Applicant MUST submit with his or her scholarship application a financial aid notice from their school indicating the financial aid amount awarded to the Applicant for the academic year OR a letter from the Applicant’s law school indicating that the Applicant is not eligible to receive financial aid.

1040 Tax Form: The Applicant MUST include a copy of his or her Federal 1040 tax form filed in the most recent fiscal year with his or her scholarship application. If the Applicant is married and the Applicant and his or her spouse file separate Federal 1040 tax forms, please provide a copy of the Applicant’s spouse’s most recent Federal 1040 form. If the Applicant did not file a Federal or State income tax return in the most recent fiscal year, explain in writing why no tax return was filed.

Letters of Recommendation: The Applicant MUST include two letters of recommendation with his or her scholarship application. The letters should address the Applicant’s academic achievements, professional skills and any public interest/community service work performed by the Applicant. All letters should be signed, dated and included in sealed envelopes to the HCBF at the above address. Letters from family members will not be considered.

Taste of Diversity & De-stress Event. Tuesday, April 30, 2019, in FCR at 12:30 PM & 5:30 PM

The Offices of Diversity & Inclusion and Student Services invite you to attend: Taste of Diversity & De-stress Event on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, in FCR at 12:30 PM & 5:30 PM.

Join the Offices of Diversity & Inclusion and Student Services for a taste of diversity where student groups serve food which represents their culture or organizations. There will be activities to help students de-stress, such as games, DIY stress balls, therapy dogs, and much more!

This will also be the last day to collect items for the New Hour for Women & Children Long Island Drive. Donations will be collected for women recently released from Riverhead and Yaphank correctional facilities. If you plan to donate, please bring your donation to this event.

Brandeis Association Scholarship Fund-Deadline Extension May 27, 2019

Subject: Brandeis Association Scholarship Fund.

The Brandeis Association is proud to announce that it will be awarding three Scholarships of $5,000. The Brandeis Association of Queens County Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to Jewish law students currently in their 2nd or 3rd year of study at the time of submission and who are residents of Queens County or who are attending law school in Queens County. Only one application is necessary for all three scholarships: Jerome Ginsberg Scholarship, Moses M. Weinstein Scholarship, Hon. Charles J. Thomas and Liliane Thomas Scholarship. In awarding the scholarships, consideration will be given to financial need, legal scholarship and community involvement. The deadline for the filing of the scholarship application has been extended. All applications must be postmarked on or before May 17, 2019. The scholarships will be presented at the annual Brandeis Association Scholarship Fund Breakfast on Sunday, June 23, 2019.

The 2019 Tannenwald Writing Competition

Subject: The 2019 Tannenwald Writing Competition

The Tannenwald Writing Competition is named for the late Tax Court Judge Theodore Tannenwald, Jr., and designed to perpetuate his dedication to legal scholarship of the highest quality. The Tannenwald Writing Competition is open to all full or part-time law school students, undergraduate or graduate. Papers on any federal or state tax-related topic may be submitted in accordance with the Competition Rules (viewable at www.tannenwald.org).

Cash prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,500 for the top three papers.

Deadline for submitting papers: 9:00 P.M. EDT, July 8, 2019.

Smith-Doheny Legal Ethics Writing Competition

Subject: Smith-Doheny Legal Ethics Writing Competition.

The Smith-Doheny Legal Ethics writing competition is sponsored by the Notre Dame Law School.
The best submission on any legal ethics topic will win a $2,500 prize. Any current student at an American or Canadian law school may submit an essay on any legal ethics topic. The essays will be judged on their clarity, coherence, creativity, insight, and mastery of the rules and cases relevant to the topic of the essay in question. Submission deadline is Friday, April 26, 2019, at 5 P.M.
Entries must not exceed 50 pages, including notes, on 8.5 x 11 paper, double space, and standard font.
Please include a cover letter with contact information and name of current law school.

2020 Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship

Subject: 2020 Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship

Baker Donelson is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where the individual differences among people are understood, respected, appreciated, and recognized as sources of strength of the Firm. With this in mind, the Firm is delighted to announce that the 2020 Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship application is now available.

There will be three scholarships awarded to three diverse rising 2L law students who will complete their first year of law school by June 2019. Recipients will be awarded a six-week, salaried 2L Summer Associate position for the summer of 2020 in one of the Firm's offices. Additionally, each recipient will be awarded $10,000, which will be paid prior to the student's third year of law school, to help defray the cost of law school tuition and related expenses.

DC Law Scholarship

Subject: DC Law Scholarship

The DC Law Scholarship is a recurring scholarship worth $2,000 designed to help one continuing law student with their tuition costs.

Who is Eligible: Admitted law school student attending an accredited law school in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Application Instructions: Applications including all supporting documents must be submitted in full, online, by January 31,2020 in order to be considered. A winner will be announced on, or before, February 28, 2020 at which point the $2000 will be sent to the student's financial aid department to help pay for their tuition costs.
