DANY Law Student Scholarship Opportunity
The Defense Association of New York has announced that it will award (2) two $2,000.00 scholarships to law students!
  • Defense Association of New York, ideal applicants, through education and future practice, are looking to improve the services of the legal profession, elevate the standard of trial practice, and facilitate and expedite the trial of disputed claims. 
  • Eligibility Guidelines: 
    1. Scholarship is open to all second-year (2L) and third-year (3L) students, enrolled in an ABA-accredited school;
    2. The student must be in good standing with a 2.5 or equivalent GPA. 3. Must be a New York State Resident;
    3. Must be a New York State Resident;
    4. Selection of the recipient is based solely upon the determination of the Scholarship Committee based upon the following criteria: a. Academics b. Writing sample c. Personal Interview (if requested) d. Law School Transcript; and
    5. Recipient must attend DANY Awards dinner, May 10, 2018, to receive award

TheBackPackerCo Scholarship 2017-18
  • TheBackPackerCo is pleased to announce the "TheBackPackerCo Scholarship 2017-18", which is open to all the students who are passionate about traveling.
  • To apply for this scholarship: applicants need to make a personalized video of any destination where he/she has traveled, and the best one will be the awarded with 500$.  There are no limits aside from your creativity for this.
  • Scholarship value: USD $500 scholarship will be awarded to 1 student, chosen as the winner by TheBackPackerCo judging panel. Students are free to use the scholarship amount towards any expense related to his/her educational pursuit.

2018 Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice $5,000 Essay Competition!
  • Topic of the paper: focuses on non-disclosure provisions in Settlement Agreements. Students are asked to analyze if courts should enforce public policy disfavoring non-disclosure provisions?
  • Content: Essay submissions are sought on the topic “Non-disclosure provisions in Settlement Agreements:  Should courts enforce public policy disfavoring them?”
  • Eligibility: The competition is open to all current law students and all masters of law students. Co-authored submissions are eligible; if selected, the co-authors will share the prize. Each submission must be an original, unpublished academic work, but simultaneous submissions will be accepted. 
  • Format: Submissions must be emailed as Microsoft Word documents. They may be full-length law review articles or shorter academic essays and should use footnotes (not endnotes). The word count may be between 6,000 and 25,000 words, not including footnotes. 
  • Winning Submission and Prizes: The winner will be notified by email. The winner will receive $5,000. Only one winning paper will be chosen and only one prize awarded.
  • Submission Deadline: Submissions must be emailed on or before Saturday, April 30, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, to Amanda Fleming at afleming@citizen.org. Papers emailed after this date will not be considered.

The American College of Employee Benefits Counsel is pleased to announce the 
14th Annual Employee Benefits Writing Prize!
- Up to two prizes will be granted, which include the Alvin D. Lurie Memorial $1,500 award and the Sidney M. Perlstadt Memorial $1,500 award. 
- Papers MUST deal with employee benefits topics. As an illustrative example, a paper might address legal issues involving health benefits, pensions, 401(k) plans, or severance packages. 
- Winners will be honored during the College’s annual black-tie dinner on September 15, 2018, in Nashville, TN. The College covers the travel and lodging expenses for the prize recipients. 

The winning papers will also be distributed to the Fellows of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel (who are experienced attorneys who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the employee benefits). 
- Please note, submissions may include papers prepared for class assignments, law journals or other purposes, as well as those written especially for the Prize.

2018 Real Property Law Section Lorraine Power Tharp Scholarship
 The New York Bar Foundation is also pleased to announce the 2018 Real Property Law Section Lorraine Power Tharp Scholarship, which has been established by a gift from the Real Property Law Section of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) to honor the memory of Lorraine Power Tharp, Esq., a former Chair of the Section and a former President of the Association
• The $5,000.00 scholarship will be awarded to a second- or third-year law student who best exemplifies the core values important to Lorraine – academic excellence, a demonstrated interest in public service, high integrity and, if possible, an interest in real property law. A preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.
• In addition, the scholarship recipient will be invited to attend Executive Committee meetings of the NYSBA Real Property Law Section during the 2018 calendar year and to work on one of the Section’s many Committee projects or Task Forces. 
• Scholarship Application Requirements:
