TRUSTS AND ESTATES LAW - Wednesday, February 1, 2017
The Trusts and Estates Law Section Fellowship – Value: $5,000.00 (4)
The fellowship will be awarded to first-year (1L) and second-year (2L) law students who are currently enrolled in law schools in the State of New York to work in trusts and estates law positions in the public sector in the State of New York during the summer of 2017. 

Miriam Maccoby Netter Fellowship – Wednesday, February 1, 2017
The Miriam Maccoby Netter Fellowship, created and funded by the Intellectual Property Law Section – Value: $5,000.00 (1)
The fellowship will be presented to (1) student attending a law school in New York State to assist with the organization’s intellectual property law matters. The student must be enrolled in law school located in New York State during 2017 or have received their J.D. any time within the last 3 years to participate in the summer 2017 fellowship.

HEALTH LAW - Wednesday, February 15, 2017
Diversity Summer Fellowship in Health Law
The fellowship will be awarded to law students who are currently enrolled in law schools in the State of New York to work in Health law positions in the public sector in the State of New York during the summer of 2017. (More information will be announced at a later date.)

WARREN & KALLIANOS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2016 ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

The personal injury attorneys at Warren & Kallianos have seen the devastating outcomes of driver distraction far too many times. We want to raise awareness about this dangerous habit in an effort to end car crashes caused by inattention. We are proud to launch our annual scholarship program to assist young people in furthering their educations.

Eligibility to Enter the Scholarship Competition
We invite students from across the United States to enter the competition by submitting an essay. The contest is open to students who meet the following criteria:

High school juniors and seniors;
Students currently enrolled in 2-year or 4-year colleges or universities;
Applicants who are 17 years old or younger need to provide parental consent to enter. 
International students, those who are not U.S. citizens, and residents of U.S. territories are not eligible. 
Employees of Warren & Kallianos and their immediate family members are also not eligible.

Application and Essay Requirements
Essays must address one of the above topics and contain at least 500 words, but no more than 1,000. Your essay must be your own original work. Plagiarism is a serious violation and will result in automatic disqualification.

Sattiraju Law Firm is pleased to announce the 2016 Sattiraju Law Firm Employment Law Scholarship. At the Sattiraju Law Firm, we are dedicated to helping hard-working people get the just pay and treatment they deserve. We want to expand our efforts of helping people by investing in the next generation of lawyers.

Even though all students with plans or who are currently attending law school are encouraged to apply, special consideration will be given to those who plan or are specializing in employment law or who are the immediate relative of a transport/truck driver that has been classified as an independent contractor. We believe employment law is an especially important area of law and want to encourage those who are committed to helping workers.

Who Is Eligible to Apply
Any student who will be attending an accredited college or university in the United States by Fall 2016 is eligible to apply. Applicants must have plans of attending law school in the future and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Award
The winning recipient of the scholarship will be announced on January 31, 2017. He or she will receive a $1,000 scholarship award, which will be paid directly to the college or university.

2016 American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize

The American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize is a writing competition designed to promote scholarship in the areas of professionalism, ethics, civility, and excellence.

Interested authors are asked to submit an original, unpublished essay of 10,000 to 20,000 words on a topic that addresses issues of legal excellence, civility, ethics, and professionalism.

PRIZE
The author of the winning essay will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and the essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review. The Prize will be presented during the annual American Inns of Court Celebration of Excellence at the Supreme Court of the Unites States in Washington, DC on November 5, 2016.

DEADLINE
The submission deadline is July 1, 2016.

Religious Liberty Student Writing Competition

The Religious Liberty Student Writing Competition was created to promote legal and academic studies in the field of religious liberty by law students and students pursuing related graduate studies. Students who have graduated from law school but who are not yet practicing law due to clerkships or other similar pursuits are also invited to submit papers.

FORM
Scholarly paper relating to the topic of domestic or international religious liberty, broadly or narrowly construed, consisting of 9,000 - 13,000 words, including footnotes. Eligible papers must be typed, thoroughly cited and presented in a format suitable for publication, with no additional editing requirements. Papers must conform to bluebook requirements and may includes footnotes. Papers prepared for academic coursework are permitted.

SELECTION
All papers will be reviewed for their conformity to the above requirements and for their substantive treatment of the topic. Awards will be presented at the Religious Liberty Award Dinner in Washington, DC on Thursday, October 6, 2016.

AWARDS
Top entries will receive the following awards:

First Place: $4000 cash award.

Second Place: $3000 cash award.

Third Place: $2000 cash award.

Honorable Mention: Four $1000 cash award.

SUBMISSION

Stephen E. Herrmann Environmental Writing Award

The American College of Environmental Lawyers announces its annual Stephan E. Herrmann Environmental Writing Award for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Award:
The Herrmann Award is a stipend of $3,500 to the author of the winning submission, whether an article, note, case comment or essay, and $500 to the submitting law journal. The winner of the Herrmann Award will be invited to present his or her submission to the Fellows at the ACOEL Annual Meeting.

Eligibility:
Student edited law journals or equivalent publications published by accredited U.S. law schools are eligible to submit annually a single candidate article, note, case comment or essay selected for its ability to promote understanding of legal issues in the broad field of environmental law, including natural resources law or environmental or resources aspects of energy law.

Annual Law Student Writing Competition 2015-2016

The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers is pleased to announce the Annual Law Student Writing Competition 2015-2016, which is co-sponsored by the ABA Section of Labor & Employment  Law.

Eligibility
Authors may not have graduated from law school prior to December 1, 2015. Graduate Students in law school (LLM candidates) are not eligible. Entries should address aspects of public or private sector labor and/or employment law relevant to the American labor and employment bar.

  • Students are encouraged to discuss a public policy issue, practical implications of a leading case or doctrine, a statute or the need for statutory modification, or a common law doctrine. 
  • Articles may address U.S. law, international law of relevance to U.S. labor and employment attorneys, or how a legal topic is treated in states across the country. 
Prizes
First Place: $3000, Second Place:$1000, Third Place: $500.
  • The first-place winning article will be published in the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law. In addition, the author will be a guest at the annual CLE program, of the ABA Section of Labor & Employment Law and honored at the Annual Induction Dinner of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.

The Competition honors the memory of three leading figures in American city planning law is open to law students and planning students writing on a question of significance in planning, planning law, land use law, local government or environmental law.

PRIZE

2016 Professor William R. Ginsberg Memorial Essay Contest

The Professor William R. Ginsberg Memorial Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to challenge law students to analyze environmental issues confronting us today.

Topic:
Any topic in environmental law.

Eligibility:
Contest open to all JD and LLM candidate students enrolled in New York State law school. Essays may have been submitted for course credit or for law reviews, but not as part of paid employment.

Length:
Maximum length, 35 double-spaced page.

Format:
Each entrant MUST submit a hard copt and an electronic version in Microsoft Work.

Awards:
The first place winner will receive a $1,000 prize, the second place winner will receive a $500 prize, and third place will receive $250. All winners will receive certificates.

2016 Legal Writing Contest

The International Association of Defense Counsel announces its 2016 Legal Writing Contest, which is open to students in accredited law schools in the United States and Canada. IADC is an association of lawyers, barristers, solicitors, corporate counsel, and insurance executives from over 40 nations.

Topics
Entries must be the original work of a single author, not previously published, and they must cover the fields of tort law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence, or other areas of practical concern to lawyers engaged in the defense or management of the defense of civil litigation.

Monetary Awards
An IADC committee will judge the contest and will reward monetary prizes of US $2,000 for the first place, US $1,000 for second, and $500 for third place. The judges also may award honorable mentions. Winning and honorable mention entries will be considered for publications in the IADC's quarterly Defense Counsel Journal.

Biennia Scholarship Program 2017-2017

The Essex County Bar Association and its Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in conjunction with the Hon. Vincent J. Biunno Memorial Fund, is pleased to announce the continuation of the Biunno Scholarship Program for the 2016-2017 school year. The scholarships are designed to offer financial assistance to persons with disabilities who are currently attending law school. For purposes of this scholarship, a disability is limited to a permanent physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual having such an impairment.

Criteria

1. Recipient must demonstrate a present and permanent physical or mental disability that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual. Medical documentation establishing the nature and extent of the disability will be required.

2. Recipient must be a resident of New Jersey. There will be a preference given to Essex County residents.

3. Recipient must have attained a 3.0 or equivalent GPA in law school, or if they are an incoming student, a 3.0 undergraduate student.

4. A preference will be given to a person seeking to pursue a career in the field of advocacy for persons with disabilities.

5. A preference will be given to students who can demonstrate financial needs.

The Smith-Doheny Legal Ethics Writing Competition

The Smith-Doheny Legal Ethics writing competition sponsored by the Notre Dame Law School will award the best submission on any legal ethics topic $2,500 prize.

Eligibility
Any student at an American or Canadian law school may submit an essay on any legal ethics topic. The essays will be judged on their clarity, coherence, creativity, insight, and mastery of the rules and cases relevant to the topic of the essay in question.
