The 2013 writing competition topic is "In Spring 2013, the US Supreme
Court is likely to issue its decision on Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum, 621
F. 3d 111 (2d Cir. 2010), cert. granted, 80 U.S.L.W. 3237 (U.S. Oct. 17, 2011)
(No. 10-1491), involving a claim under the Alien Tort Statute, which allows US
courts to recognize a cause of action for violation of the law of nations
occurring within the territory of a sovereign nation other than the US. Here is
your chance to weigh in as an amicus curiae on how the court should rule!
The winning essay will be
published in an official Section Publication. Winners will also receive a
complimentary registration to the Spring Meeting, coach airfare (21 day advance
purchase) and lodging expenses of up to $1,000. Travel costs will be reimbursed
after the Spring Meeting. Any taxes due on cash awards are the responsibility
of the winners. Deadline for submissions: February 1, 2013.
