March
18 is the 50th Anniversary of the landmark case Gideon v Wainwright and in
commemoration of it NYCLA and Arnold & Porter LLP are hosting an event in
Manhattan on the anniversary. The event will feature a premiere of the film
Gideon’s Promise Unfulfilled at 5:30 followed by a moderated panel
discussion at 6 p.m. and then a cocktail reception. The film, narrated by actor
Martin Sheen of West Wing, is an extraordinary documentary that takes viewers
on a fascinating journey through the heady days of the Gideon decision through
the present day, and examines the challenges still facing the indigent defense
system. The panel will feature federal and state prosecutors and defenders
moderated by Peter L. Zimroth, Partner, Arnold & Porter LLP, former
Corporation Counsel of the City of New York, who will discuss what the landmark
decision did or did not do for people accused of crime and what needs to happen
to fulfill the promise of Gideon.
The
event is complimentary and open to the public. Please RSVP at
