ABA Forum on Construction Law

The ABA Forum on Construction Law is accepting articles for its Law Student Writing Competition. 

The deadline for the writing submission is January 15.

This competition is open to all law students in good standing and attending an ABA-accredited law school during 2014. Students may submit articles on a wide array of topics related to construction law. Articles should reflect the style of articles published in either the forum’s The Construction Lawyer magazine or the Under Construction newsletter.

The forum has presented these awards annually since 2010. Senior ABA Forum on Construction Law members will judge the submissions, which will be selected based on creativity, clarity and precision of writing, strength of argument, novelty and timeliness of subject, and quality of research. 

Winners will receive $2,000, travel expenses and registration for the forum’s 2015 Annual Meeting, plaque, a one-year membership in the forum and recognition in the forum’s newsletter, Under Construction and on the website; in addition to the opportunity to be published in one of the forum’s two publications, Under Construction or The Construction Lawyer. Other finalists will be recognized with a plaque and in forum publications. Winners will be announced and notified in March.  Forum Chair Steven Lesser will present the awards at its 2015 Annual Meeting, April 16-18 in Boca Raton, Fla.

2015 Interleges Award Essay Contest

Now in its tenth successive year, the Interleges network is proud to announce the Interleges Award 2015:-

TOPIC: TRANSNATIONAL ADJUDICATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS: NATIONAL TRIBUNALS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO INTERNATIONAL COURTS

The essay should address one of the following sets of issues:

1. Can and do national courts provide different or increased remedies to victims of human rights violations as compared to international courts? Are national courts available to enforce the decisions of international courts and how effective are such efforts? Include an evaluation of the reported effectiveness of national courts in providing remedies for such victims, and suggest improvements.
2. Compare the recent trends in courts of such countries as the United States to reduce the availability of their courts for international human rights violations with the trends in the courts of such countries as Spain and Italy to provide an effective forum for such matters. Include an analysis of what role if any differences between the common law and civil law systems affect both the availability of national forums and remedies, and the willingness of the various national judiciaries to undertake a generous reception of international human rights claims.
3. Examine the right of access of alleged victims of human rights violations to the national courts of various countries where defendants have financial resources that might be applied to judgment rendered in favor of such claimants. To what extent do national courts enforce the judgments of other countries in favor of human rights victims? To what extent if any do the doctrines of comity vary between common law and civil law jurisdictions in their reception of foreign judgments in favor of human rights victims? 

PRIZE MONEY: €4,000.00

The winner will also be invited to attend part of the Interleges Annual General Meeting 2015 to receive the award, which takes place in New York 14 – 17 May 2015.

2015 Professor William R. Ginsberg Memorial Essay Contest

This annual competition is designed to challenge law students to analyze the environmental issues confronting us today.

Award Criteria: Contest is open to all students enrolled in a New York State law school. Essays may have been submitted for course credit or for law reviews, but not as part of paid employment.
Criteria for judging entries will be organization, practicality, originality, quality of research, clarity of style.

Length:
Maximum length, 35 double-spaced pages (including footnotes, which may be single-spaced).

Format:
Each entrant MUST submit a hard copy AND an electronic copy in either Microsoft Word or Wordperfect 5.0. Essays may be emailed to kplog@nysba.org

Prize Awarded: 1st place: $1,000 and publication by the NYSBA. 2nd and 3rd place: $500 and $250 respectively - consideration of publication by the NYSBA. Certificates.

2014-2015 The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law writing competition

The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law are pleased to announce their 2014-2015  writing competition.

This competition is open to articles written while the author is a student at an accredited law school in the United States. Authors may not have graduated from law school prior to December 1, 2013. Graduate students in law school (LLM candidates) are not eligible. Entries may address any aspect of public or private sector labor and/or employment law relevant to the American labor and employment bar. Articles may address U.S. law, international law of relevance to U.S. labor and employment attorneys, or how a legal topic is treated in states across the country, but papers limited to the law of a single state will not be considered. Students are encouraged to discuss a public policy issue, practical implications of a leading case or doctrine, a statute or the need for statutory modification, or a common law doctrine. Entries will be evaluated on topic selection, analysis, quality of research, grammar, spelling, usage and syntax, clarity, structure, overall appearance, and relevance to the practicing labor and employment law bar.

The following prizes may be awarded by the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers: First Place: $1500, Second Place: $1000, Third Place: $500. The first-place winning article will be published in the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law, and its author will be a guest at the annual CLE program of the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law and honored at the Annual Induction Dinner of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. The College and the Section reserve the right not to select any article for publication or award any prizes if, in their judgment, the submissions do not meet their standards for publication.

2015 Mollie and Paul Hill Student Writing Contest

 

DEADLINE:  Midnight (EST) on January 2, 2015.

The Florida State University Center fore Innovative Collaboration in Medicine and Law, based in both the FSU College of Medicine and the FSU College of Law, will present awards for the outstanding original papers submitted by a law student and a medical student or medical resident in response to a question pertaining to collaboration between the medical and legal professions. The writing competition is made possible by a generous gift from Mollie and Paul Hill.

AWARDS

• Outstanding paper by a law student - $250
• Outstanding paper by a medical student or medical resident - $250

2015 CONTEST QUESTION

There is a growing consensus that the U.S. health care system is frequently characterized by the excessive and unnecessary provision of medical services. One of the impediments to rationalizing medical practice to reduce tests, procedures, and treatments that are not clinically indicated and appropriate for particular patients is the perception by practicing health care professionals that the prevalent and often overused tests, procedures, and treatments are compelled by the current American legal system, and that health care professionals’ efforts to reduce the current waste and inefficiency will result in their expanded exposure to malpractice litigation and liability. Discuss the ways in which the medical and legal professions may work together collaboratively to address the problem of excessive, unnecessary, wasteful, and inefficient provision of medical services in the U.S.

2015-2016 James Bellefeuille Writing Scholarship

James Bellefeuille has created the first ever law school scholarship for students attending law school in the 2015-2016. This scholarship is open to all students attending an ABA accredited program in the United States. 

He is challenging today’s law school students to think differently for this writing competition for a chance at a $1,000 law school scholarship for 2015-2016.
Eligibility Requirements

• Accepted or Attending an ABA Accredited Law School.

• Minimum GPA of 3.0

• Write a 1-3 page essay

• Deadline July 31st, 2015

• All materials submitted.

• We will award the applicant on August 1st, 2015 and send a check directly to their law school on behalf of the student.
