2015 HOWARD C. SCHWAB MEMORIAL ESSAY CONTEST SECTION OF FAMILY LAW

Each year, the American Bar Association Section of Family Law conducts an essay contest to encourage law students to think about current issues in family law, and to encourage participation in the Section of Family Law.  Students may write on any aspect of family law. The contest is open to second and third-year full-time law students (and second through fourth-year part-time students) of all ABA-approved law schools, and to first year students where family law is taught as part of the first year curriculum.

Winning entries receive the following: Monetary prize, certificate of recognition, consideration of essay’s publication in Family Law Quarterly and the Section website, letter to law school dean regarding the achievement, and one year complimentary membership to the Section.  To enter, one must submit an entry form by April 17, 2015.  Essays are due May 1, 2015.

Judge Bernard S. Meyer Scholarship

The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and will be awarded to one (1) student.

Established in 2004 by the law firm, Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C., the scholarship will be awarded to a law school student who excels in legal writing and advocacy skills.  

An essay that displays excellence in legal writing and advocacy skills must be submitted for consideration of this scholarship.

The Puerto Rican Bar Association Scholarship Program

The Puerto Rican Bar Association is pleased to announce the 2015 Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) Scholarship Program for Latino law students. The PRBA, founded in New York in 1957, is one of the oldest Latino bar associations in the United States.   

The PRBA awards individual scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $5,000 based on the funds raised by the PRBA.

All Latino students attending law school in New York or who are permanent residents of New York are eligible to apply.  PRBA selects recipients based on community involvement, financial need and academic promise.  All applicants must be entering their first, second, or third year (third year evening students who are entering their fourth year may also apply) of a JD degree program at an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school. Students working towards their LL.M. are NOT eligible for this award.

Deadline:  Received by Friday, April 18, 2015

All scholarship candidates must submit a complete and accurate application along with the required supplemental materials received by April 18, 2015 to be considered.

The 2015 Ms. JD Fellowship

Ms. JD partners with the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession to provide mentoring and professional development to our Fellowship class. In addition to receiving financial support and invitations to ABA and Ms. JD events, each fellowship recipient is paired with a mentor chosen from among the Brent Award honorees, Spirit of Excellence Award recipients, and ABA Commission on Women in the Profession Commissioners.

2015 Mike Eidson Scholars

The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women for Justice Education Fund in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson, whose vision and generosity inspired it.  The scholarship, traditionally in the amount of $5,000, is awarded annually to a rising 3L (or rising 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a plaintiffs’ lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.


In order to be awarded this scholarship, you must be present at our Annual Convention on July 12, 2015 in Montreal, Canada. Your travel and accommodations will be paid for as part of the award, but please note that all international travel requires a passport.
