The Hudson County Bar Foundation Scholarship Fund

The Hudson County Bar Foundation will award scholarships to students who are attending law school or who have been accepted to law school for the September 2013 – May 2014 term.

The Hudson County Bar Foundation Scholarship Fund is one of the oldest providers of financial assistance to Hudson County law students. Esteemed members and families of the Hudson County legal community have funded these 45 scholarships.

In addition to our prestigious list of endowments, the HCBF is pleased and honored to announce three recently funded scholarships. The Hon. Shirley A. Tolentino I & The Hon. Shirley A. Tolentino II Scholarships and the Justice Marie L. Garibaldi Scholarship.

Students must be bona fide residents of Hudson County; must demonstrate financial need; must provide two (2) current Letters of Recommendation and must account for appropriate academic standards.

Bernadine Johnson-Marshall and Martha Bell Williams Scholarship

The Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey, Inc. (ABWL-NJ), founded in 1975, is the longest running women’s bar association in New Jersey.  As a non-profit and non-partisan organization, ABWL-NJ is dedicated to community involvement, education, diversity in the legal profession and initiatives designed to encourage greater participation of African-American women in the field of law.

The Bernadine Johnson-Marshall and Martha Bell Williams Scholarship program is one of several significant ABWL-NJ annual program activities.  Scholarships in their honor will again be awarded to female law students of African descent selected by the Scholarship Committee who are either: (1) enrolled at an accredited law school in New Jersey; or (2) New Jersey permanent residents enrolled at an accredited law school outside of New Jersey.  To be eligible, the student must be a 1L, 2L or Part-time 3L.  (Students expecting to graduate in 2013 are not eligible). Previous ABWL scholarship recipients will not be considered.  The upcoming awards will be presented to the selected law students at the ABWL-NJ Annual Scholarship Jazz Brunch, which will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at The Pines Manor, 2085 Route 27, Edison, New Jersey 08817.

A former capital defense attorney with law school debt, Heather Jarvis now dedicates her expertise to helping student loan borrowers make better decisions so that higher education can be a reality for all - not just those who can afford it. Specializing in training for high-debt borrowers and the people who love them, Heather has provided guidance and information to thousands of students and recent graduates.  She has contributed to student debt relief policy for the House Education Committee and others in Congress, and spent more than six years Heather Jarvis advocating for public service loan forgiveness, which allows more recent graduates to dedicate their careers to the greater good.

Queens County Bar Association Scholarship

The Queens County Bar Association will be awarding a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving law student in the spring semester. The scholarship will be based upon personal financial need, a commitment to community service and academic achievement as demonstrated by your  personal statement and letters of recommendations. The applicant must be enrolled in a law school in the Metropolitan Area or be a resident of Queens County. These scholarships are available to First, Second, or final year law student.

Cole, Schotz, Meisel, Forman & Leonard, P.A. is committed to the advancement of diverse law students. We believe that fostering diversity in the legal profession contributes to the quality of the profession and strengthens our ability to serve our clients and communities. As part of Cole Schotz’s continuing commitment to inclusion in the legal community, we have created the Cole Schotz Diversity Scholarship.  The Cole Schotz Diversity Scholarship is open to a second-year, full time law student in good standing.  Consideration is given to the candidate’s academic achievement, involvement in community service, demonstrated leadership abilities and advancement of diversity in the legal profession. The recipient will

receive a one-time $5,000 scholarship.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for the Cole Schotz Diversity Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• The applicant must be a full-time student in good standing who will complete his/her first year of law school at an ABA accredited Law School by July 1, 2013.

• The applicant must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 at

his/her undergraduate school and law school.

• The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America as

well as attend an ABA accredited law school in a state where Cole Schotz’s offices are

located: Delaware, Maryland New Jersey, New York or Texas.

• The applicant must not be the recipient of another diversity scholarship award.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must complete and submit on or before July 1, 2013 the accompanying application form by email

with the following mandatory additional items:

• Official undergraduate transcript;

• Official first-year law school transcript;

• Current resume;

• A typed personal statement of 750 words or less. The statement must include

information about (1) why the candidate wishes to pursue a career in law; and (2) how the

candidate’s background, life experiences and/or goals as an attorney would improve

diversity in the field of law;

• Proof of residency;

• List of all scholarships and grants you will receive for the next academic year. Please provide the amount of each scholarship and grant.
